How do we calculate this?
Costs accrue evenly within each year. Modernized annual costs stay constant; legacy costs grow at the selected rate. The model excludes taxes, financing costs and the time value of money.
- Downtime cost
downtime = downtimeHoursPerMonth × 12 × downtimeCostPerHour- Manual work cost
manual = manualHoursPerWeek × 52 × manualCostPerHour- Current annual cost
M0 = maintenance + licenseInfra + downtime + manual- Modernized annual cost
M1 = Σ category × (1 − category_reduction)- Legacy cost in year t
M0 × (1 + g)^(t−1)- Cumulative legacy cost
C(T) = Σ_{t=1..T} M0 × (1 + g)^(t−1)- Modernized cost including investment
Mod(T) = investment + T × M1- First-year savings / 5-year difference
M0 − M1 / C(5) − Mod(5)- Investment ceiling when the budget is unknown
maxInvestment(N) = C(N) − N × M1
Break-even is the first time C(t) = Mod(t), using linear interpolation between year boundaries. Investment is paid at t = 0. If M1 ≥ M0, no break-even is shown. When break-even takes more than 5 years, the chart extends to 10; if it still does not occur, this is stated explicitly.
When the budget is unknown, the chart and five-year difference use the investment ceiling. If the ceiling is zero or negative, zero is shown and the selected payback target is marked as unmet.
