When does an application need modernization?
Application modernization changes the part that makes software difficult to use or maintain while preserving working business rules. Start with a problem in orders, reporting, shared access or data exchange, then define the behavior to retain and the first change.
Which parts can be changed?
Select the target around the existing code, data, licences and operating environment, then test the first workflow in a pilot.
- A desktop application → a renewed desktop, web or hybrid application chosen around shared access, offline work and device connections.
- An older PHP application → an assessed version upgrade or components separated in stages.
- A .NET or Java application → clearer functional boundaries, tests and release procedures.
- A workflow tightly coupled to its database or frontend → application boundaries whose behaviour can be tested.
Repair, upgrade, replace a workflow or adopt a product?
Choose a task such as accepting an order, updating stock or preparing a report. Compare the options through that task’s cost, waiting time and access controls.
| Option | When might it fit? | What do we check in the pilot? |
|---|---|---|
| Fix the existing component | The problem is limited to one query, report or connection | The same output with less waiting and manual intervention |
| Upgrade the runtime and dependencies | The workflow fits but updates, support or capacity are a constraint | Preserved business rules, the update path and resource use under equivalent load |
| Move one workflow into a new application | A part needs shared access or independent development | Permissions, consistency between the two systems and rollback |
| Adopt an existing product | A product covers the standard requirements | Data migration, total subscription/licensing costs, integration and data export |
The comparison includes running two systems during the transition, training, licences and ongoing maintenance in the total cost. The result may run in a browser, on a desktop or on a device; the work determines the target.
How do we move from assessment to production?
- Record existing behaviour: critical operations, business rules, data relationships, dependencies and baseline measurements.
- Choose the first increment: define boundaries through business value, dependencies and reversibility; write acceptance tests.
- Implement and compare: prepare the agreed function and compare old and new results using representative data.
- Rehearse the transition: test data transfer, reconciliation, permissions, operating checks and rollback steps.
- Hand over: deliver the accepted version, documentation and outstanding work with named owners.
What is delivered alongside the code?
- In-scope code changes and instructions for running them.
- Documentation of preserved business rules and changed behaviour.
- A migration and reconciliation plan, with transfer scripts where included in scope.
- Acceptance results, the measurement environment and unresolved findings.
- Handover notes covering deployment, monitoring and rollback.
The business case can be framed through cost, performance and continuity. If scope is still uncertain, the Legacy Health Check is the preliminary assessment for that decision.
When is retaining the current application the better choice?
If the problem is confined to a report, query or connection, fixing that part may be sufficient. Maintainable parts that meet the business need do not belong in a migration merely because they are old.
What determines the modernization quote?
Dependencies, existing tests, data transfer, integrations and acceptable downtime define the work. The proposal separates assessment, pilot, migration and handover, with third-party licensing and operating costs considered separately.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I start if I do not know the software name or version?
Describe the task, where people wait and how many people use it. We establish the technical inventory together during the initial assessment. You do not need to send passwords, client data or source code for that conversation.
Does the whole application need to be rewritten?
We do not assume a full rewrite. Separating one report, screen or function may be enough. Retaining the system, renewing part of it and a broader migration are compared with their reasons and trade-offs.
Will operations stop during the transition?
The need for downtime depends on the data and migration method. Maintenance windows, parallel operation and rollback conditions are planned explicitly. A zero-downtime transition is not assumed, and rehearsal results may change the schedule or scope.
How do we know existing records migrated correctly?
Record counts alone are insufficient. Reconciliation rules cover critical fields, totals, relationships and sample business transactions. The treatment of incomplete or invalid records is documented before the migration.
Which new technology will be used?
Business requirements, the maintaining team’s capabilities, dependencies and pilot results inform the choice. A technology listed on this site does not imply a delivered project or an existing solution for that technology.
Who maintains the application after delivery?
The responsible team, access, operating documentation and support scope are agreed in the contract. Handover includes the agreed running and maintenance procedures, not just a copy of the code.

Java 8 Java 25Sources and approach
Keep order, payment and overnight workflows while moving to a maintainable Java platform.
Keep: Business rules, data contracts and working integrations.
Change: The JDK, dependencies and build process; a complete rewrite is not required.
Cost
Replace emergency compatibility work with planned maintenance. Compare JDK licensing and support by distribution.
Performance
Test JVM and code changes against the same workload to find ways to reduce peak-time waiting.
Security
Establish a maintainable update path for JDK and library security patches.

- Java 8 has no universal end date. Oracle lists commercial Extended Support through December 2030; entitlement depends on the distribution and contract.
- Java 25
- Choose the Java 25 LTS distribution and support entitlement separately. Oracle JDK 25 uses NFTC terms, with OTN licensing planned for updates after September 2028.

Keep the desktop tool your team knows while renewing the platform behind imports and maintenance.
Keep: Workflows, desktop screens and validated device connections.
Change: The runtime, packages and deployment process. WinForms/WPF can remain on Windows; moving to the web is optional.
Cost
Simplify installation and version management. Keep Windows, tooling and UI component licences as separate budget items.
Performance
Focus on time spent waiting for imports and periods when the interface becomes unresponsive.
Security
Make runtime and package patches easier to maintain while keeping the operating system supported.

Improve reporting, backup and database maintenance without replacing the application screens.
Keep: Business data, access boundaries and accepted report results.
Change: Upgrade to supported SQL Server or migrate to PostgreSQL with compatibility work. Licence price alone does not decide the route.
Cost
Compare licensing, hosting and maintenance together. PostgreSQL has no licence fee; migration and operation still have costs.
Performance
Address query plans and disk reads behind slow reports, then check the outcome against the same data.
Security
Address data-loss and access risks with a supported version, appropriate permissions and a tested restore process.
